FBI urges router reboot

The FBI is advising everyone to reboot their internet router to help thwart new malware that could potentially block network traffic, collect information and even make the devices inoperable.

The malware, called VPNfilter, targets routers produced by several manufacturers, according to the FBI, which notes that the initial infection vector for the malware is unknown.

A recent report by Talos, which lists devices potentially affected by the malware, estimates the number of infected devices to be at least 500,000 in at least 54 countries.

The FBI recommends any owner of small office and home office routers reboot the devices to temporarily disrupt the malware and help aid in the potential identification of infected devices.

The agency also is advising router owners to consider disabling remote management settings on devices and to secure the routers with strong passwords and encryption. Network devices should be upgraded to the latest available versions of firmware.
