Love letter malware

That valentine that just arrived in your email may not be what it seems.

According to a recent report from the SANS Internet Storm Center, there's a new malware campaign carrying ransomware with subject lines that include "Always thinking about you" and "I love you."

The emails have attachments that all start with "Love_you." Opening the attachments will infect the users' computers with ransomware.

Consider taking the following steps to protect yourself from attack:

  • Don't click on links or attachments in any email unless you were expecting to receive the email.
  • If you're uncertain, contact the person purportedly sending the email to make sure. Do not use phone numbers included in the email. Find the correct number on your own.
  • Use a regularly updated antivirus program and take advantage of automatic updates of signatures and software.
  • Make sure your computer and network router have the most recent patches and updates.
  • Do not visit untrusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
